What is Teams and how can I use it with my class?

Microsoft Teams is a one-stop learning platform for your class. All classes at Hagley College have a Team already created for them - so there is no need to invite or ask students to sign up to your Team. However, you will need to activate it when you set it up for the first time.   There are four main areas in Teams: Posts, Files, Class Notebook, and Assignments . Posts is like a news feed for your class. Teachers and students can post and reply to messages. To create a post click on the New conversation area at the bottom of the page: Click return or the dart image to post the conversation to Posts. For more information about creating posts and announcements in Posts click here . To set the Posts tab as read-only for students  click here . Files is the class storage location for files. Top Tips for Video Calls with your class

Video calls are a great way to keep in touch with your class when teaching and learning remotely. Setting up for the Video Call: Use the Teams Calendar to schedule your video call with your class .  Prepare your lesson as you normally would planning a range of online and offline tasks for students. Use the Class Notebook inside Teams to create a page of work to distribute to your students.  Click here for details about using the Class Notebook in Teams for remote teaching. Immediately before the video call: About 10mins before the Video call, go to your Class Team or  Teams Calendar and Click “ Join ” in the scheduled meeting.  Once you have selected your meeting join options, you may like to blur your background by clicking the ellipsis : Ensure you are set up to share your computer screen - close any programmes and internet tabs which are not relevant to student learning. How do I use Teams Chat to have a conversations with a small group of students?

Teams Chat is a great way to have an online conversation with a small group of students. This could be useful if there are a number of students who are working on the same topic at the same level. To create a Chat go to Teams and right click on chat to create a New Chat : Then start typing the first few letters of the name of the students you would like to chat with: Once you have your Chat set up, all people in the Chat can contribute to, respond to and view all posts from all Chat members. Participants can add attachments, emojis and links to files. If you need to switch to a voice or video call select the icon in the top right of the Chat:  Use this toolbar to add more people to the Chat, or to share your screen with other Chat members too. 

What is Teams Chat and how do I use it?

Teams Chat is an internal messaging system which is a fast way to communicate with staff and students at Hagley College. It is intended to save teachers time and to be used like a text message rather than an email.  There are many other advantages: Invite 1 or 100 participants to a Chat  Start a voice or video call within a Chat  A chat history is always available from previous Chats Collaborate to share ideas and discuss Instantly react to chat messages with emoticons To create a chat go to Teams Chat:  Right click Chat and select "New Chat" then type the first few letters of the person (or people) you would like to chat with:  Click the more options symbol and create your message When you are finished, click the dart to send. Adding an external participant to a Teams video call

There are several options to invite someone outside of Hagley College (or someone who cannot access your class Team for whatever reason) to a Teams Video call. This only gives the external participant access to the video call, not to any aspect of the class Team.  This information presumes you are familiar with How to schedule a video call in Teams for Hagley College staff and students . Option 1: When scheduling the video call meeting in Teams, add the external participants email:  Once the Meeting has been saved, the external participant will receive an email which will include a link to click on to access the online meeting.  Option 2: If the meeting has already been scheduled, go to your Teams Calendar and click on the meeting. Once opened, select and copy the text in the meeting:  This text can be pasted in to an email to be sent to the external recipient. Scheduling a video call with your class in Teams

When you need to schedule a future online video meeting with your class, the best option is to use Teams Calendar. Click on the time in which you want to meet with your class. This could be the same time as when you would usually meet with them face to face.  Single click to open the Calendar. Add a meeting title and schedule the correct time. In the "add Channel" section type the class course code and then select the General Channel. This will invite all students in your class to the meeting.  Set the recurrence as weekly so that all students will know that your meeting is on the same time each week. Add details for the video call in the meeting description section so students know what to expect. Let students know if they need to prepare for the meeting. Click send, this will put a Calendar Invite in to all students Teams Calendars. Using PowerPoint Screen recorder

Teachers can create mini lessons for students to watch such as this one:  Step 1:  Open PowerPoint and on the Insert tab of the ribbon, select  Screen Recording . Step 2 : On the Control Dock, click Select Area Step 3 : Click Record  Tip: Unless you pin the Control Dock to the screen, it will slide up into the margin while you record. To make the unpinned Control Dock reappear, point the mouse cursor at the top of the screen. Scheduling or creating instant video calls in Teams Chat for small groups or staff

You can make an online video or voice call from Chat in Teams. Step 1: Go to Teams and right click on chat and select "New Chat": Step 2: Start typing the first few letters of the person (or people) you want to chat with. This can be students and/or staff at Hagley College.  Step 3:  Step 4: The person you are calling will receive a notification similar to this one: The Teams app can be downloaded on to a mobile phone and video and audio calls work in the same way as above. How to Teach a live lesson in Teams using Meet Now

Teachers can teach a live lesson with all members of your Team (Class) using Meet now in Teams. It is necessary for all students to know in advance when this will happen. For example, you might make an announcement in Posts that tomorrow at 9am there will be a Meet now for all students. When the time comes: Step 1: Click on  Teams and Posts, then select the Video Camera icon (Meet now) Step 2:  This will create a new post for all members of the Team to meet online. This is a student view: Step 3:  When a student joins the Meet Now they can decide to join with or without video (Without video means the student can see the Meet Now but cannot be seen) and also with or without their Microphone (Without mic means the student can hear the Meet Now but cannot be heard). Step 4:  I recommend all users join with video and mic for the first 5mins, then they can decide to switch video off if they prefer. A mics need to me muted at all times unless someone wants to speak.   St

Providing Feedback in Teams

I can create an assignment with an attached resource and rubric Step 1: Go to Assignments and select Create Assignment Step 2 : You may like to create a template for the assignment and upload that as a copy for each student to edit. There is more information here.  I can provide comments and feedback on an assignment Step 1 : Click on the Assignment:  Step 2 : Click on the student's assignment you want to grade, then right click to add a comment for formative feedback and once the assignment is complete enter your thoughts in to the Feedback section. 

Teaching and Learning with Teams

The Class Materials folder in Files is a 'read only' location for students so this is a great place to store files relevant to you class to look at but not change: I can upload a file to this location, by clicking on Class Materials and Upload:  I can get a link to a file in Class Materials by highlighting the tick box on the left hand side of the file name and then selecting 'copy link' I can then copy this link: and paste it in to Posts for students to access this file: In Class Notebook, I can turn on the Teacher Only Section and distribute a page to my students  Step 1: Turn on the Teacher Only Section by selecting Class Notebook, Manage Notebook Step 2: Select Add Teacher-Only section group. Step 3: Once you have created a page in the Teacher-Only Section and you are ready to distribute this page to the students to work on their own copy.
