How might remote learning look for my class?

Remote learning is not the same as face -to-face learning so don't try to replicate what you do in your usual classroom teaching time.

"The number one goal of schooling currently is to nurture wellbeing." Perry Rush, President, New Zealand Principals' Federation

  • Set clear and consistent expectations with how (probably Microsoft Teams) and when (during school hours if possible) you will communicate with your students.
  • Let parents know how you will be operating your class and encourage them to be involved in their child's learning if they are able to.

Structure your lesson in a 3 phase format: Before lesson learning, video call and independent work.

Phase 1: Before the lesson:
Create activities for students to complete which will introduce them to what you are going to discuss in your video call. This might be a reading, a video clip which you have created, or activities from Education Perfect. These activities might take the students 5-15mins. Students may contribute their learning to a shared file or be ready to share what they have learned in the video call.

Phase 2: Video Call.
This 30min phase is as much about well-being as learning. This time is for students to see you, interact with you and their classmates. After your welcome and introduction, use 10mins or less to do direct instruction teaching encouraging students to think and reflect. After this time, give students an opportunity to work together. Use a shared file from your OneDrive for students to contribute to or start a conversation in Posts or even use the meeting chat. After this collaborative learning activity, go over work which you intend students to carry on with once you end the video call.  At this time students can ask questions about the work and their learning. There are instructions about setting up your video call here and further recommendations about the role of the teacher here during a video call.

Phase 3: Independent work.
At the conclusion of the video call, students work on their own completing the work you have discussed in Phase 2. Stay present in the video call for another 10mins in case there are any new questions. After that hang up the call and be available via chat/posts/email for the rest of the usual class time to answer questions and support student learning.
